✏️ Three Super Important Things To Improve Your YouTube SEO
(Cannabis and Psychedelics Edition)
This post was written by our resident YouTube expert, Cass Zingone 🫡
Struggling with YouTube SEO?
Here are three ways to improve.
Triple your keywords
Tripling your keywords, along with saying your target keyword in your video, is very important.
Avoid using words such as "cannabis", "marijuana", or "psychedelics" for these keywords.
“But how will people find my cannabis videooooos?”
(Don’t worry— we’ll get there)
Avoiding these words will help you avoid your reach being affected by YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines.
The advertiser-friendly content guidelines are generally aimed towards content glorifying consumption specifically, but it’s worth noting that YouTube’s algorithm is entirely computer and AI-powered, and all videos are screened by a machine— NOT a person.
This means that content talking about the business of cannabis, educational psychedelics content, and more can also get flagged and pushed down the list, resulting in it simply not being recommended to viewers.
So if you’re a small channel, it’s best to avoid these words when you can. Otherwise, you risk limiting your growth.
“But I see huge channels using words like “cannabis” all the timeeee!”
Correct. That’s because they’re huge channels and don’t need to focus on YouTube discovery and its algorithm to get found— they already have an audience.
Trust us, we know. We’ve been through a lot of trial and error with our clients, and we know what works (and what doesn’t).
Okay. So you’ve got your keyword in mind. Now what?
Here’s what you need to do to triple keywords:
Have the keyword in your title
Use the same keyword in your description
Make sure you're using the keyword in your hashtags
Keywords are important for SEO anywhere, but especially for YouTube.
How are people supposed to find your video useful (or find your video at all!) if you're not targeting them by using the correct words to name the video that actually describes what the video is about?
Pin your own comment
You can use this as a "call to action" and be the first person to comment on your own video.
Say something prompting such as "Would you ever do this? How would you have done things differently? Let me know in the comments below," or "If you have any questions about this video, or if you would like to add anything I missed, please let me know in the comments".
Encourage the viewer to post their thoughts and bring your video engagement up. Honestly, your comment alone will slightly bring the engagement metric up ⬆️
Research the video you're posting and make sure that you are using the correct hashtags.
If you start putting random tags in the tags section, it’ll bring your video further from the audience that will find your video useful and just annoy people who have it end up in their feeds for no reason.
Avoid using broad hashtags and try to make them more specific.
As we mentioned before, don't use words such as "cannabis", "marijuana", "edibles" or "psychedelics.”
Like we said before, these words are generally triggered more when talking about consumption, but we think it’s best to avoid them most of the time when you can.
Remember: Cannabis is not legalized everywhere and YouTube is a global platform.
Large channels that have millions of followers and monthly sponsors can do whatever they want, including using these words, but to get to that point we need to build a large audience — and to build a large audience you need your videos to be found and seen.
